Plagiarism: Code of Conduct

Striving for consensus

We are currently consulting on the following Code of Conduct for educational Coursework Libraries. We welcome feedback from all interested parties. Please send comments to Pete Taylor.

Communication Requirements

  • Sites will clearly and unambiguously state throughout that the penalty for plagiarism in an academic institution can be very severe.
  • Sites will prominently provide throughout, clear and unambiguous links to, or information on, best practice in academic referencing.
  • Sites will have a clearly stated and unambiguous anti-plagiarism policy, and provide evidence of the steps they have taken to underpin that policy.

Site and Service Requirements

  • All essays will be submitted to leading plagiarism detection software prior to being issued to users, and this should be made clear to users throughout the site.
  • Sites will not allow students to subcontract their coursework assignment to them, or to third parties.
  • All essays will include hidden text within the essay body and meta data which identifies the work as the IP of the Coursework Library.
  • Sites will allow tutors to access the library at no cost for the purposes of plagiarism detection.
  • Sites will provide a facility for users to report suspected cases of plagiarism, at every point in which an essay is displayed to a user.

General Requirements

  • Sites will work closely, openly and proactively with the educational community to strive to minimise the risks of plagiarism, and maximise the educational value of their services.
  • Sites will not provide services designed to undermine the integrity of the assessment process.
