Plagiarism: Anti-Plagiarism Activities

Proving our commitment with action

Since implementing our Anti-Plagiarism Strategy we've shown our committment with the following actions.

  • Linked our plagiarism policy from the main menu on every page of the site, and linked our advice on avoiding plagiarism from every essay page - accompanied with a strong warning on the dangers of plagiarism.
  • Commissioned a guide on good referencing and how to avoid plagiarism which is given FREE to all members. This guide was edited by the JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service, with a foreword from the Shadow Minister for Higher Education.
  • Implemented watermarking in our documents which makes it more difficult for people to copy & paste whole sections of coursework
  • Started submitting all our essays to TurnitinUK - the UK's leading plagiarism detection software to protect our members' hard work
  • Where individual teachers or lecturers are suspicious that plagiarism has taken place, we provide a free login to enable them to check the site fully. Simply contact us for more information.
  • Pete Taylor (our Operations Director) took part in a Questions & Answers panel session at the 2nd International Plagiarism Conference hosted by the JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service alongside Professor Don McCabe of Rutgers University; Ruth Barrett, University of Hertfordshire; Professor Tom Angelo, Victoria University of Wellington; Dr Malcolm Read, JISC Executive Secretary; and Young Lee of iParadigms (the manufacturers of Turnitin Plagiarism Detection Software).
  • Pete Taylor attended the Universities UK conference of Vice Chancellors on plagiarism. Our announcement to submit all our coursework to TurnitinUK was announced by the Chairman in his opening address.
  • Pete Taylor took part in (and was on the winning side) of a debate at Oxford University, opposing the motion, "This house believes that the rise of technology is undermining the traditional values of rigour and integrity in academic research and study.". Other participants in the debate and the wider conference were: Jude Carroll (Oxford Brookes University), Prof. Jonathan Zittrain (Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at Oxford University), Kevin Donovan FRSA (Consultant), Sara de Freitas (Birkbeck College), John Barrie (CEO Turnitin plagiarism detection software), Andrew Charlesworth (Bristol University)
  • Initiated detailed dialogue with the JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, and the Commons Select Committe for Skills & Education to work out the details of how we can reduce plagiarism by closer co-operation of all parties.
