Ibuprofen is a drug that has many uses not only in athletic medicine but also in a common population. Depending on dosage ibuprofen may be used for children age six months old to adults to achieve anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticoagulation and/or antipyretic effects (Mayoral). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) originally approved the use ibuprofen in adults in 1984, and 1989 approved the drug for use in children (Burke). Today ibuprofen is seen in many forms and strengths. Some common brand names that contain ibuprofen are Advil, Motrin, and Tofen (rxlist). While this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) is common both in use and form, it is important to have a knowledgeable background, because this like any other drug can have lethal side effects if not taken carefully.
