Oscroft One aspect of basic nursing care undertaken for the patient, Peter, referred to in NRSBN1005, and is psychological methods of treating hallucinations. Hallucinations are a 'sensory perception without external stimulation of the relevant sensory organ' (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000).I chose this subject as I am absolutely fascinated with the experiences, Peter described to me. Peter's experience's and history of auditory hallucinations and schizophrenia goes back about 10 years. The overwhelming of hearing voices in his head is a major part of his daily life, while Peter's medication helps to reduce his symptoms somewhat, but not all. Although the newer, atypical neuroleptic medications have demonstrated efficacy in the management of psychotic symptoms, including auditory hallucinations (Tuunainen, Wahlbeck, & Gilbody, 2001; Wahlbeck, Cheine, & Essali, 2001), they are not totally effective.
