Maintaining appropriate and successful oral care can have an enormous impact on an individual's well-being and also can enhance their self-image (Xavier 2000, Shepherd 2002). The nurse's role is to provide mouth care or to supervise self-care or care by relatives as necessary (Turner 1996).
