The competitive market was inculcated to the conveyance of health care in April 1991 at the instigation of the Conservative government, remaining a dominant feature of the NHS until 1997 when dismantled by the incoming New Labour government of Tony Blair. The New Labour government emphasized the values of partnership, collaboration and co-operation, and it has been argued by some that when juxtaposed with this rhetoric, the competitive market was wholly inappropriate to the delivery of health care. In this essay, one will outline the disadvantages of the competitive market and compare these with the reforms of New Labour and its philosophy.
