Social Class in the UK Socio-economic position refers to an individual's place in the social hierarchies built around education, occupation and income. These three components of socio-economic position are important, because of their determining influence on an individuals life chances and living standards. In Britain, class has been defined using the Registrar General's scale of Social Class and Socio-economic groups. This consisted of six major classes, ranging from 'Professionals' in class one to 'Unskilled' in classes five and six. Class three was sub-divided into manual and non-manual skills I Professional etc occupations II Managerial and Technical occupations III Skilled occupations (N) non-manual (M) manual IV Partly-skilled occupations V Unskilled occupations While individual occupations have been reallocated to different classes, the overall shape of the model has changed very little during the past sixty years.
