E2 Outline how clients gain access to the service provided. There are many different health care services and many different ways in which the potential service user gains access to those services. Referrals are the main way access is gained to health care. They are usually classified in three ways. * Self-referral: occurs when service users themselves apply for a service. This is done by calling themselves in person, by telephone, by letter or by application form. An example of this is calling your GP to discuss a health problem then making an appointment at the surgery. * Third-party referral: occurs when people apply for a care service on behalf of another person. This could be a family member applying for an elderly relative for specialist treatment. Access to health care services is covered by the patient's charter.
