CLINICAL INTERVENTION FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE EXPOSED TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Preamble: clinical intervention with children who have experienced domestic violence is a fairly new area of work, as the traditional focus of intervention, particularly within the shelter system, has been with women. it has only been in recent years that children have been seen to be more than mere passive witnesses to domestic violence; current research and intervention is focusing on children as "experiencing the violence" and as such identifying the impacts of the experience on children's wellbeing and daily functioning (Kemp and Dupuis, 2000, p.6, Saathoff and Stoffel, p. 99) when reviewing clinical interventions that mitigate trauma for children who are exposed to domestic violence, it becomes clear that the interventions must occur on several levels and include prevention strategies physical safety of the child is paramount when providing clinical intervention for children exposed to domestic violence (Baker and Cunningham, 2004, p...
