Mental Disorders ARE Medical Diseases Among mental health professionals, the classification of mental disorders has long been debated. Approaching this debate from a medical model, Sheldon H. Preskorn claims that mental disorders are medical diseases. During the 1950s and 1960s, the psychoanalytical approach dominated the field to mental illness. At the time, it was believed that personal reflection would prove to be the successful form of treatment. However, the promise to cure was never fulfilled. As advancements in medical technology progressed, American psychiatry moved away from psychoanalysis and focused more so on a medial approach. Medications were found that alleviated the symptoms of mental illness. For Preskorn, the discovery and proven success of medical treatment proves that mental illnesses are linked to biological factors.
