Alcohol is the most widely available and commonly used psychoactive substance among young people (Rassool & Winnington, 2003). A recent study showed that, in the United Kingdom, nearly 40% of adolescents had been drunk by the time they reached 15 years (Hibbell et al, 1999). Excessive alcohol consumption can result in adverse biological, psychological and social effects which can lead to antisocial behaviour. This essay will highlight these effects and examine methods used to prevent alcohol abuse by young people. The most common problems adolescents experience are due alcohol intoxication and binge drinking.
