Describe what psychologists have found out about why people do not follow medical advice Developing an accurate picture of adherence is difficult partly as estimates of patient compliance vary widely. Taylor (1990) suggested that 93% of people fail to adhere to some aspect of their treatment whereas Sarafino (1994) suggests that people adhere relatively closely to their treatment 78% of the time if it is short term and 54% of the time if it is long time. This illustrates that defining adherence is one reason why estimates vary - Taylor defined adherence as complying precisely to every detail of recommended treatment whereas Sarafino allowed for the way that most people customise their treatment to fit in with their lifestyle while still complying with the general features of treatment.
