The concept of care in the community is that it "...focuses on individuals with need, and recommends that these needs are met by individualised packages of care" (Coulshed & Orme, 1998, p.45). This assignment will evaluate the notion of 'care in the community' by examining the historical context of community care for people with mental health problems, looking at models of care and considering some of the benefits and difficulties people with mental health problems face. Mentally healthy people are described as being able to cope in social situations and form and maintain relationships; as having the ability to develop and continuously readjust by learning new skills and meeting new challenges (Tilbury, 1993).
