Critically assess the challenges posed by an elderly prison population. The prison population is growing at a record pace over 7 percent annually, but for the first time, it's graying even faster. For the first time in history, there is a dilemma of an aging population. Older offenders, who commit violent crimes and are sentenced to long periods of imprisonment has become an astonishing fact since the early 1990s. This emerging problem will only be exacerbated in the future as an increasing number of aging in mates find their way into the prison service here in Britain and the correction settings in America. This new aging issue for elderly prisoners includes dementia, cancer, stroke, incontinence, and other chronic conditions such as arthritis and hypertension, which are frequently symptoms of this population, are further taxing many economical strapped prison systems.
