It was not purely for entertainment, as it also had an essential role to play in the harmonious functioning of African society. It relied heavily on music and dance, along with mime, masquerade and acrobatics. But by far the most significant element of African theatre was its story telling aspect. In a society where reading and writing was inaccessible but to a privileged few, oral methods were just about the only way to convey information. Stories of great warriors, heroes and events have been passed down from generation to generation, hence the stories of African drama provide not only entertainment value, but are a crucial means of passing historical and religious information, and of providing moral and social education.
