Justin Welch HST 232 Essay: Section B, Question 6 The 'Success' of Thatcherism In 1979, Margaret Thatcher led her Conservative Party and parliament, as she became Prime Minister. She would remain in that position for the next eleven years, the longest since 1832. It is during these years that Thatcher took steps of action and reform that greatly changed the face of the United Kingdom. Although her government had some failures and recession during her term, Thatcherism did experience success in many areas, if only for a short period of time. Thatcherism was able to bring about a more efficient and competitive Britain. In order to understand the success of Thatcherism, one must look at Thatcher's policies and actions in dealing with inflation, union strikes, privatization, housing, education, and foreign policy.
