A comparison of how Allende and Esquivel employ magical realism in their novels Both Isabel Allende and Laura Esquivel employ magical realism to dramatise and exaggerate events in each of their novels. They are two writers who create significant connections between the supernatural and female voice. They explore the influence provided by spirits to create an alternative story form. Clara's notebooks are the medium through which, Allende narrates and preserves authentic female experience. Making use of ghosts and spirits that centre on their female characters, Esquivel and Allende are able to communicate their story from a feminine point of view which produces a narrative that contrasts greatly to traditional European/Western writing. Magical realism is a writing technique that has been used for many years by many leading novelists in central and South America, such as Garcia Marquez, Alejo Carpentier and Isabel Allende.
