The Thames Gateway Region consists of a 40-mile stretch of land along the River Thames, from the London Docklands to Southend in Essex and Sheerness in Kent. The area contains 3,800 hectares of brownfield land, much of it former dock, warehousing, industrial and quarrying uses. The Thames Gateway Region is the focus for the biggest building programme to be undertaken in the UK for over 50 years with close to 200,000 new homes to be built. The area, which includes much brownfield land, has been designated a national priority for urban regeneration. The area is home to around 1.6 million people, and approximately 700,000 households, averaging 2.4 people per household, currently supporting some 500,000 jobs. It contains some of the most deprived districts in the country, characterised by lack of access to public transport, services, employment and affordable quality housing.
