The Civil War began in 1861 because of the northern and southern societies diverging. Many factors caused this war to begin. One major factor was the huge economic differences between the north and south. The economies in these two areas were so diverse they eventually decided to go to war against each other. By the middle of the 19th century the north and south were far from similar. The southern economy was primarily based on farming. The southerners felt that for them to keep their economy growing they had to have slaves. Slaves allowed the southerners to work for them to keep their economy growing they had to have slaves. Slaves allowed the southerners to work for them for free. The southerners had to buy these slaves but in the long run it allowed the farmers to have hard working slaves, that would be able to work for them day in...
