How has the critique of development as a discourse differed from earlier critiques such as that put forward by dependency theorists? Are you convinced by either critique? In this, the twenty-first century, it is often somewhat difficult to believe that there still exists a wide level of disparity between the countries of the Western world, and those of the Third World. Although there has been much attention given to theories of development over the last century, the economic and social gaps between these two contrasting parts of the world appear to have worsened. While the notion of pumping billions of dollars in aid into these countries was considered to be a solution, this has done little to alleviate poverty in the Third World.
