Franziska Salem 900-02-0600 POLS 350 Prof. Nadja Farah Assignment II Dependency Theory The Dependency theory deals with the relationship between the wealthy North and the impoverished South. The theory claims that the impoverishment of the South is a direct outcome of their exploitation by the advanced countries in the age of Imperialism; which in turn led to the superior development of the North. While the countries in the North could accumulate sizeable capital, the countries in the South were further plunged into underdevelopment.1 The Dependency Theory further claims that a new form of Imperialism has now taken over; what used to be done through imperialism is now done by multinational corporations which lead to the development of the South while keeping it dependent on the North.
