Colonisation in Ecuador, Peru & Bolivia (FRONTIERS IN THE AMERICAS) The three central Andean countries of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia (see fig. 1), suffer similarly to other Latin American countries, with regard to underdevelopment and poverty. However, their lack of progress is particularly evident in the Andean Oriente, the interior lowland to the East of the Andean mountain range (see figs. 2,3 & 4). Most of this region had been uninhabited for centuries (except for small, sporadic groups of relatively primitive Indians), in effect, the region missed out on the discovery and settlement by the Spaniards in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and by other settlers through time. This was essentially due to its inaccessibility and isolation, as there was obviously more advantageous areas to colonize.
