Account for the different experiences of peasants in east and west Europe during the early modern period. The Elbe River which divides Europe roughly into east and west also served to divide it economically, socially and politically during the early modern period, it is a division that to a large extent still exists today. This division was most obviously manifested in the experiences of the peasantry during this period. There existed a huge discrepancy between the free peasantry of the west and the serfdom experienced by those in the east, this arose from a number of reasons ranging from the regions culture, the economic development of the area and the differing decisions that lords in these respective areas took at crucial times.
