Critically explore this statement with reference to official criminal statistics. In order to investigate the above statement, I intend to critically explore what is meant by the Official Criminal Statistics (OCS); how they are collected, catalogued and interpreted. I shall then examine how these statistics translate through the eye of the media to the public; do the public take their view of 'the crime problem' from the newspapers or television (etc.)? This leads us to question, what is 'the crime problem'? Is crime, as interactionist sociologists argue, socially constructed, where many incidents are considered 'wrong', but it is down to the individual's perception as to whether a particular act is classed as 'criminal'. Mead claims, 'interpretations of reality are learnt through the ways in which people perceive and react...to the various behaviours...
