How Effective Has The Prison Service Been In Reducing Suicide In Prison? Introduction The aim of this essay is to talk about suicides in prisons; to try and explain the different factors that make people decide to take their own lives while inside; to identify the different steps and methods of prevention the prison service has in order to reduce or even stop that tragedy happening; and finally to evaluate how effective theses have been in reducing the suicide rates in prison. Deaths in custody, whether in police or Prison Service establishments, not only bring tragedy to the family and friends of the individual but can also have an equally distressing impact on those who are involved in their care (www.sps.gov.uk).
