Anthropologists first used ethnography as a means of understanding the social interaction, behaviours and attitudes of different cultures. Sociologists use ethnography to study sub cultures such as class and religious beliefs, and policy related issues such as poverty and crime. It is an approach used by interpretavists and involves interpreting the actions and attitudes of individuals. As ethnography is an in-depth study of people, then only small groups can be observed so it is hard to generalise findings to the rest of society, although "ethnographers are often not concerned with empirical generalisation but rather with making theoretical inferences, and this does not require the case studied to be representative".
