To answer the above question, I have selected three significant concepts of contemporary religion, which are important to and have had a significant effect on religious development. The three areas I will be discussing are secularlization, globalization and the spiritual supermarket concept. "Whatever the differences in their approach to religion Marx, Durkheim and Weber all foresaw a major decline in its role in the modern world" (Bruce 1992 pg31) So what is secularization? Bryan Wilson defines it as, "The process whereby religion had been relegated from centre stage in the social system, to a much more subsidiary role, is the process known to sociologists as secularization" (Wilson.
