Then I will relate this to how information about the temperature and composition of the Sun can be obtained by using the solar spectrum. An atomic spectrum occurs when an electric current is passed through a gas and the gas becomes excited. The light that is emitted has a characteristic spectrum of colours depending on the elements in the gas. (Ref2) There are two different atomic spectrums. The first is the Emission Spectrum, an example of this is when a substance is sprinkled on a flame and the flame changes colour, for example when sodium is used the flame glows yellow. The emission spectrum occurs when light is emitted at a series of particular wavelengths characteristic to the element
