TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN UNIVERSITY UESB 1113 GENERAL LABORATORY I ATOMIC STRUCTURES & PERIODICITY BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONS) BIOTECHNOLOGY YEAR 1 SEMESTER 1 EXPERIMENT 4: PREPARATION AND REACTIONS OF BORIC ACID, H3BO3 NAME/ID: HEW XIN HONG / 05UEB02306 LOW WEI SEONG / 05UEB02315 TUTORIAL GROUP: GROUP 4 DATE: 20TH JUNE 2005 TUTOR: MR. LEE CHONG YONG Experiment 4 Title: Preparation and Reactions of Boric Acid, H3BO3 Objectives: * Is to synthesize the boric acid B(OH)3 from sodium tetraborate as starting material. * A crystallization technique will be used to obtain the final product. * A better understanding on the physical properties predominantly, the crystal structure of the boric acid will be studied. Theory and Background: Boron is one of the simplest of atoms. The only simpler ones are hydrogen, helium, lithium and beryllium. Boron has chemical symbol B, atomic number 5, and occurs naturally as 80% B11 and 20% B10. The latter isotope has a high cross section for thermal neutron absorption, 3800 barns. Thermal neutron counters...
