OCN - 1202 9/27/03 Recrystallization and Melting Point Analysis Abstract: An unknown carboxylic acid, in an impure solid sample, was dissolved and re-crystallized to a pure solid state. Its melting point was compared to that of a literature value to determine its identity. To future confirm its identification, a matched and a mismatched carboxylic acid melting point experiment was conducted. The unknown #42 was determined to be o-Chlorobenzoic Acid. Techniques Used: Electronic Analytical Balance Vacuum Filtration Thomas-Hoover Apparatus Electronic Analytical Balance - An electronic closed vessel measuring apparatus precisely and accurately measured the proper amount by mass of a sample for use in the experiment. Vacuum Filtration - A small polypropylene funnel equipped with a frit is used to collect solid precipitates. The frit, which is also polypropylene, allows the filtrate (liquid) to be drawn though into a collection vessel while keeping the precipitates within the funnel. Thomas-Hoover Apparatus - This melting point apparatus uses...
