Rates of Reaction Investigating how the rate of a chemical reaction is affected by changing either the concentration of the reactants or the temperature. Introduction A chemical reaction happens when particles collide and react with each other. This can only happen, however, when each particle has enough energy. The reactants in a chemical reaction are turned into products. A reaction which needs more energy in the breaking of bonds than in the formation of bonds is called an endothermic reaction because energy in the form of heat is taken in, causing the temperature to decrease. An exothermic reaction is the opposite; more energy is given out in the formation of bonds than is needed to break the initial reactant bonds. The minimum amount of energy required is called the activation energy, which is also the amount of energy put into the reaction. This is different for each different reactant.
