... Throughout history individuals '...have knocked their heads against the riddle of the nature of femininity'. (Freud, 1986, p.412) Freud's focus of his lecture is the understanding behind the existence and causes of femininity; a topic Freud (1986) finds himself struggling with great 'internal difficulty' coming from a reputable psycho-analytic standpoint, torn between saying too little, too much and nothing innovative to many diverse audiences. Nonetheless his eminence provides his authority to discuss the subject, but to which lengths is debateable. Freud's (1986, p.413) article draws our attention to the gender distinctions we make when we meet humans; we automatically think 'male or female?' However, the ways in which he explains this are challengeable. Freud concludes human sexuality can be based on reproductive duties (men 'actively' seek the 'passive' ovum during sex) this provides a narrow perspective to build his argument upon as he ultimately observes women as passive inferior subjects in
