In order to study religion, it is useful to have a definition; according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, religion is: 'monastic conditions, being a Monk or a Nun, the practice of sacred rights, one of the prevalent systems of faith and worship, human recognition of superhuman controlling power and especially of a personal God' (Block 4, p.34). In contrast Ninian Smart's dimensional model can also be used to define religion.
