INTRODUCTION Depression is a potentially life-threatening illness which affects approximately 3-7% of the population (Smith & Weissman, 1992, as cited in Hammen, 1997), with women being diagnosed twice as often as men (Klermen & Weissman, 1989, as cited in Hammen, 1997). This essay predominantly focuses on the treatment of Unipolar and Bipolar Depression, otherwise known as Major depression and Manic-Depressive Disorder respectively. Unipolar Depression is classified as one or more major episodes, whilst Bipolar Depression is additionally comprised of one or more manic episodes (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). The likelihood of recurrence of depression after a single episode is 50%, and after three episodes this increases to 90% (Mah et al, 1992, as cited in Dilts, 2001). Depression is the most common antecedent to suicide (Asgard, 1990, as cited in Dilts, 2001), 15% of sufferers commit suicide and up to 40% attempt it (Guze & Robins,
