INTRODUCTION Depression is a potentially life-threatening illness which affects approximately 3-7% of the population (Smith & Weissman, 1992, as cited in Hammen, 1997), with women being diagnosed twice as often as men (Klermen & Weissman, 1989, as cited in Hammen, 1997).
