Horsdean traveller's site Evaluating the success of local action. Gypsies and travellers are increasingly featured in the media as a group in society "that need controlling" (Richardson, 2006, p.77). However, controlling such groups becomes an increasingly difficult task with consideration of the complex relationships between the settled and travelling communities which impedes upon any progress in agreements on control. Gypsy travellers cause problems in society as a result of their nomadic traditions which often sees groups settling upon private or common land. Residents often react negatively to these settlements, with some describing the gypsy travellers as "idle, ungodly and criminal minority who live like pigs and die like dogs" (Holloway, 2005, p.355). Although a harsh comment, the media have been seen to publicise many travellers in such a way that stereotypes are formulated and applied to often harmless groups. This enhances the problem of exclusion for gypsies which encourages them to segregate...
