... Natural Disasters 1991 Mt Pinatubo Volcanic Eruption Mt Pinatubo is a stratovolcano located on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The eruption occurred on 15th June 1991. Some of the hazards that resulted from this eruption were the giant ash cloud that was ejected 34km into the air and covered 125,000km2. At the same time as the eruption Typhoon Yunya was passing through 75km away bringing large amounts of rain. The eruption also released around 20 million tons of SO2 & aerosols into the stratosphere. The eruption caused pyroclastic flows to pour from the summit, which reached as far as 16km. The eruption caused a lot of damage mainly due to dangerous lahars caused by the ash and rain from typhoon Yunya mixing. Around 200-800 people died as a result of the eruption. Roofs collapsing under the weight of the ash and rain caused most of these deaths. Pyroclastic deposits have destroyed the ecosystems
