Deaf Perspectives Assignment 1a Explore the Characteristics of Deafness There are almost nine million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK as reported by (The Royal National Institute for the Deaf 2005). Some are born deaf and others become deaf through many causes. In this essay, we are going to explore some of the characteristics of deafness looking at the audiological aspects as well as definitions by category and language used. How do we perceive sound? Any source of sound sends vibrations or sound waves into the air. The Pinna collects these vibrations which are channelled along the external auditory canal to the tympanic membrane (eardrum) causing it to vibrate. The vibrations are passed across the air filled middle ear by the movement of a chain of three tiny bones, the Ossicles, which transmit them to the hearing nerve in the inner ear through a second membrane, the Oval Window.
