The Basques struggle for autonomy has been at the heart of their struggle, they are immensely proud of their history and have been fighting to protect their language and culture for thousands of years. They have developed a reputation as fierce defenders of their territory and have survived invasions from the Romans, Vikings, Visigoths, Muslims and others. The protection and promotion of their language Euskera has always been at the heart of the Basque struggle. Separatism can be traced back to the founder, Sabino Arana Goiri who was the founder of the Basque Nationalist Party and a pioneer of Basque nationalism.
