Nobody's Home The "Angel in the House" is a popular Victorian stereotype of how women are supposed to be. She was to give all the honor and respect to the husband, along with the power. Characteristics of the "Angel" are grace, selflessness, and above all, purity (Angel). Julia Ward Howe's poem "Woman" is often associated with this well-known feminine image. She presents a woman who Howe tried to be, a woman Howe believed with all her heart she could have been. Upon realizing she is not this submissive woman in her husband's house, she confesses to how much easier life would be if only she were. However, when reading more closely into Howe's "Woman," her word choice alone suggests a slightly argumentative undertone to this idea of the perfect little lady.
