INTRODUCTION When considering research into the movement of people under emergency or warning of emergency, there are 2 broad categories of research: these are concerned with "Carrying Capacity" or the "Human Responses". CARRYING CAPACITY APPROACH The Carrying Capacity school puts its emphasis on the ability of the exit route or routes to allow people to travel to the building exits and to safety. Most fire service personnel will recognise this approach from the calculation of occupancies by the available exit widths or the choke points on exit routes.
