Have a little read: ... DAILY MAIL Louis Pasteur Louis Pasteur, a famous French Chemist and Biologist who has changed our lives for the better, died yesterday. He was born on December 7th 1822, in Dole, France. It was Pasteur who founded the science of microbiology, proved the germ theory of disease, invented the process of pasteurization, and developed vaccines for several diseases, including rabies. After spending several years of his life researching and teaching at Dijon and Strasbourg, Pasteur moved in 1854 to the University of Lille, where he was named Professor of Chemistry and dean of the faculty of sciences. This is where Louis began his work on fermentation. His discovery came about when Emperor Napoleon III asked him to investigate the diseases afflicting wine which were causing considerable economic losses to the wine industry. Pasteur visited a vineyard in Arbois in 1864 to study this problem. He demonstrated that wine diseases are caused by microorganisms
