When he first enters the south he imagines a sign which says СWE SHOOT TO KILLТ, he later admits that he made this up but this shows that he thinks that southern people are violent, thuggish people. Bryson associates the west with a sense of СforebodingТ. From this we know he gets a sense of impending evil or misfortune when he goes south. This is another way he shows he does not feel comfortable in the south.
