The Biogeochemical Cycling of Phosphorus What is element cycling? The supply of elements on this planet is finite - they are not constantly produced. Therefore, to be able to supply Earths' biota with every thing it needs, elements need to be recycled through the planet in order to meet demand. Element cycling is an energy demanding process -left alone, all elements would probably be found at the greatest depths of the Earths' crust due to gravitational potential energy (DeAngelis 1992). If it were not for convection in the ocean, the water would become stratified, leaving nutrient rich waters near the bottom, making it unavailable to upper layers. The main sources of energy come from the sun and the internal heat energy of the Earth. Water plays a significant role, acting mainly as a transport mechanism and solvent.
