The first phase of the report provides basic introduction to GSM background and networks, the second phase describes GSM-R purpose, background, technology and the additional features to GSM. Introduction GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) is a cellular radiotelephone system falling under Generation II Systems which are fully digital. GSM-R (GSM for Railway) is a radio system, covering mobile communication for European railways. It provides number of remote, transmission and supplementary services and network quality.
