Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode Abstract - This paper aims to provide an introduction of Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Frame Relay. Topics covered include what they are, how they work, optimal usage, advantages and disadvantages of each as well as a brief comparison of the two. These topics are covered as these are two protocols that are have or are gaining rapid interest and are prominent technologies that are replacing traditional protocols of switching. Frame Relay has been around much longer then ATM and is commonly found in businesses using LAN or WAN technology. However, ATM seems to be gaining more interest as a more common means of transmitting data. This is due to the differences between ATM and Frame Relay as to what they can offer and under what conditions.
