Essay Topic: #2 Canada's political system is hobbled with an antiquated and widely discredited voting system called first-past-the-post that was abandoned by most major democracies between 50 to 100 years ago. As our society changes, Canadians must reflect on the quality of their democratic institutions and determine whether they continue to serve them accordingly. Elections are the cornerstone of democracy and democracy requires non- complacency and constant tending. Voting is the most direct involvement that many Canadians have with the political process. Clearly, the stakes are high as the election process determines who will form the government and which policies will be pursued. At the federal level, Canada is made up of 301 electoral constituencies. One Member of Parliament is elected for each constituency or riding.
