Discuss the usefulness of these maps." In the early 80's many people started to update their houses by installing double-glazing, and loft insulation. This made the house warmer, and less drafty. Unfortunately though, this brought problems of its own in the form of radon gas. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is found in small quantities in rocks and soil. It can accumulate in buildings especially in areas where the under lying ground is both permeable and contains increased levels of uranium. (DoE, DH, 1996).
