Automation is the allocation of functions to machines or computers that would normally be allocated to humans. Human manual control, planning and problem solving are some of the human functions often replaced with automation. Issues concerning automation are how effectively people use, trust and understand automation, how effective it is, interaction between human and machine and problems that may arise as a result of automation. The aim of automation is to somewhat replace humans or human functions. However "even highly automated systems such as electric power networks, need human beings for supervision, adjustment, maintenance, expansion and improvement. Therefore one can draw the paradoxical conclusion that automated systems still are man-machine systems, for which both technical and human factors are important." (Bibby et al, 1975).
