Assess the strengths and weaknessess of the procedures for choosing candidates for the presidency. The American constitution, not envisaging the role parties would come to play in the political system, made no provision for the nomination procedures for the presidency. Procedures have evolved over time and the legacies of past systems can be readily identified in the current arrangements. Given the lack of any constitutional law, nominations are governed by state laws and both national and local party rules. This has inevitably resulted in variations in procedures from state to state and from party to party. As Janda et al observe, "The process of nominating party candidates for president in the U. S. is a complex, drawn-out affair that has no parallel in party politics in any other nation" (1994, p191).
