In 1888, a series of murders occurred in which 5 prostitutes were brutally slaughtered; these horrific murders took place in Whitechapel in East London. These murders attracted the attention of the press, the public and even the Queen; all these years on the Whitechapel murderer known, as "Jack the Ripper" is still a well known myth. The Whitechapel murders attracted so much attention for many reasons. Whitechapel was a very poor district to be living in during the nineteenth century with a vast collection of evil slums. The area of Whitechapel was a notorious area of violence, and of course crowded at that time. Therefore, the murders were a great threat for the middle class residents as a result of the poor threatening to revolt; they wanted the murderer caught for their own safety, not for the benefit of the prostitutes involved. The majority of female Whitechapel residents were disrespected prostitutes...
